The headline above is the exact wording used for information intended for the general public in the northeast United States. It is found on a website for a firm called Health Services Administrators on behalf of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.

To further quote, the copy says “Did you know the costs of medical tests and procedures often vary widely by provider with no significant difference in quality? Harvard Pilgrim-participating, independent lab and imaging centers offer the same services as hospitals or hospital-affiliated centers and typically cost less. Knowing your options can help reduce your out-of-pocket medical costs. When you need X-rays or high-end radiology tests like MRIs, you can reduce your health care costs by going to one of these independent or freestanding imaging centers.”

This concept holds true at Diagnostic Imaging Services

Saving money by choosing an independent medical provider has been an option for consumers for several years. As the years have gone by, more and more are becoming better informed and better educated about the potential savings on healthcare costs if the time is taken to compare providers for services.

In our opinion, one additional key points holds true in the comparison endeavor. When making or attempting to make comparisons in price and/or cost, it is also equally important to understand the importance of not sacrificing quality. After all, the results to the doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, podiatrist or chiropractor is a critical element that plays a pivotal role in arriving at a diagnosis.

Computed TomographyAt DIS, you do not sacrifice quality for cost. We offer medical providers and their patients the advanced technologies of ultra-high field MRI and low-dose computed tomography. We are the only non-hospital entity in the greater New Orleans area that performs 3D mammography. We perform PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) advanced exams to stage, re-stage and evaluate cancer patients and determine progression levels of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease patients.

Well, many might think “well that’s all well and good, but where does the savings come in?” Good question. Here is the answer.

First, our set rates for exams are far below area hospitals and their hospital-owned affiliates. We have seen hospital set rates that are often $1,000 – $3,000 higher than what is at DIS. Because our set rates are lower, the eventual charge for an exam, after insurance discounts, will be much lower.

Second, DIS only has one charge for all services. Hospitals will levy at least two charges: one for the exam itself and another for the radiologist to review and issue the findings. Not only is the charge for the exam going to be higher, but people being directed to hospitals will pay additional for radiology services.
